Tomorrow is the opening day of bow season here in Mississippi. It’s just as thrilling to me as the first time I ever stepped into the woods to climb a tree. It’s always exciting to think that you might kill a buck in the velvet. Nowadays things are a little different in the sense that we have trail cameras that tells us a lot about what we’re to expect when we get to the woods. In my case, all bucks are in the velvet but none of the big boys have decided to be photogenic. That adds excitement to the thrill because I know they are there. With my Mathews bow, Easton arrows, 2 blade Rage broad-heads and Summit climbing stand in hand, off to the woods I go. I’ll let you know when the verdict is in.

I woke up Sunday morning to an article in my local newspaper about Michigan’s one doe that tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease. If you’re a deer hunter, that’s like a volcano that has erupted on about a 10.0 scale. It amazes me that after all the research that has been done, that nobody really knows what causes CWD. The doe that was tested came from a breeding farm which I guess means the doe was under a high fence. There have been a lot of speculation about what causes CWD. Some would say that pending up wildlife and not allowing them to roam in free range is the problem. Others say that feeding wildlife is feared to be the problem. What ever the problem is, we know for sure that it is 100% fatal. We also know that if it spreads, it could wipe out the entire area and who knows where their area ends. We don’t know if keeping the cape off of an animal and transporting it to the taxidermist, might spread the disease. It is all very scary. I do think that the Department of Wildlife in each state should make hunters more aware of what to look for. Are we talking about something like the Mad Cow Disease where the cow loses its’ nerve system and begins to shake and eventually can’t stand on their feet? I think hunters are the first line of defense and we should be well informed on what to look for. If a hunter takes a deer and suspects something is wrong, I feel that he should contact his local conservation office immediately. This action might very well save a lot of wildlife. I don’t mean to cause panic or scare anyone, but this is serious business.

If anyone else has read up on this disease and has comments I would love to hear responses.

It’s fourteen days till opening day of bow season in Mississippi. Some have paid their dues on sleepless nights, but for us Mississippians, we have two weeks to endure. With lock-ons up,limbs trimmed and shooting bullseye from forty yards, leaves nothing but imagination. I said imagination not dreaming, too keyed up to be dreaming. Has my trail cam captured all the bucks, or is the “big one” lurking just out of sight? He must be, because I don’t have a picture of him. Should I move my lock-on or not? Last year this was where he was sighted, but no photo yet. Did he get ran over by a car? The wait intensifies each day. It’s so much pressure that it interferes with work and home chores. I’m going to try and sleep on it and maybe I can figure it out tomorrow.

See Ya
